Kitano
A moment to unwind in the city.
Just steps from Kitano Tenmangu, Kitano serves pancakes made with eggs from Miyama, sweets infused with Uji matcha and hojicha, and comforting toasts and coffee.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Just moments from Kitano Tenmangu, a brief stroll west along Imakoji-dori brings you to Kitano, a relaxed kissaten-style cafe where you can unwind over sweets and freshly brewed coffee. Coffee beans embedded in the glass entrance door give the exterior a retro touch, leading into an unhurried space marked by considerate, easygoing hospitality.
One of the house highlights is the pancake selection, freshly baked to order using free-range eggs sourced from Miyama in rural Kyoto. The plain version arrives crowned with vanilla ice cream, and those looking for a heartier portion can opt for a double stack of 2. Tea lovers will appreciate variations rooted in the region's traditions, such as Kyoto Uji matcha pancakes mixed with green tea in the batter and finished with house matcha sauce and matcha ice cream, or an aromatic domestic hojicha pancake made with Ise tea.
For a lighter baked treat, the house-made scones are well worth considering. Choices include a moist chocolate scone drizzled with chocolate sauce, an Ise Farm hojicha scone, and an intensely flavored Uji matcha scone, each available as a set with coffee or tea. Paired with a rich, fragrant special coffee or a chilled Uji matcha or black soybean tea frappe, they make a restorative pause after walking the shrine grounds.
Savory cravings and quick bites are easily satisfied too, from honey toast or ogura sweet bean paste toast topped with vanilla ice cream to egg-mayo-cheese toast featuring boiled Miyama eggs, along with a selection of pasta dishes. Items are available for dine-in or takeout, making it an easy, welcoming stop before or after exploring the Tenmangu neighborhood.
